I am a Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. I specialize in criminal procedure and computer crime law, and I have also taught courses in criminal law, evidence, and professional responsibility.

 

My scholarship includes more than 65 law review articles, over 40 of which have been cited in judicial opinions (including seven articles that have been cited in U.S. Supreme Court opinions). I have been cited by more than 3,500 academic articles. I have also have authored casebooks, co-authored the leading criminal procedure treatise, and published countless blog posts at popular blogs such as the Volokh Conspiracy and Lawfare. These days I waste a lot of time on Twitter.

I am also a lawyer active in the California and District of Columbia bars. My experience includes briefing and arguing cases in the United States Supreme Court and three federal circuits. I have testified before Congress six times and served on the Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure by appointment of Chief Justice Roberts.

Before joining academia, I was a Trial Attorney in the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section at the U.S. Department of Justice and a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia. I earned my B.S.E. 618ip手机免费版 in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton. After next earning an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford, I went to Harvard Law School, from which I received my J.D. magna cum laude. I then clerked for Judge Leonard I. Garth of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and later for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the United States Supreme Court.
